Spanish Baby Names

Spanish babies are often given two given names but are rarely known by just the middle name. Traditionally, Spanish names were based on Biblical or classic Latin/Greek names. Catholic names are still very popular as are names from myths. Many names are used to honor characters in the bible, the most common being Maria (Virgin Mary), José (Joseph), and Jesús (Jesus Christ). Spanish girls are often given compound names related to the Virgin Mary that begins with Maria de/Maria del/Maria de la, but will go by the end of the compound name. For instance, Maria de la Luz would commonly be known as Luz throughout her life. There are very strict naming rules in Spain and the government representative has to determine if a new baby boy has a masculine name and a new baby girl has a feminine name.
