I kept my maiden name (Sherman) the DH's last name is Crook. When our son Luke was born we couldn't decide on a good solution for his last name, so he ended up with a hyphenated Sherman-Crook, which is just terrible, but we thought we could sort it out later. Now we have a girl due in July and still don't know what to do about the last name. WDYT?

I think Sherman-Crook is not terrible at all. Crook-Sherman has a better rhythm, but eh, I think Sherman-Crook is just dandy. I kept my maiden name, but our daughter has my husband's last name. Mostly because it just sounds better with most names, heh. :)

I would give your daughter the same last name as your son, I think.

I think Sherman-Crook is fine! Ditto Jen and Jen - I would stick to that for your daughter. :)

Ditto I would want my kids to have the same last name

This is something we struggle with too. I kept my LN, one syllable and common. His is 3 syllables and uncommon/hard to spell. And they sound awful hyphenated. Currently the plan is to give my last name to girls and his to boys... not perfect, but best we can think of. Anyway that's not really relevant here- I think Sherman-Crook sounds fine, definitely doable for baby 2.

It would be a lot more important to me that my children had the same last name as each other so they can bond that way than they have my LN. I kept my MN but hyphenation was impossible--my LN is Italian and DH's in Indian, it was terrible together--so we just agreed to give DD his LN and I chose the MN.

I agree--I don't think the names sound bad hyphenated at all, but it does pose problems with future generations--when your kids get married, and their spouses have different LNs, then it is Smith-Jones-Miller-Black as a LN for THEIR kids?

If you really don't like the current situation, then you can change it but keep both kids with the same LN. I have some friends who sort of combined their LNs to make whole new LNs for their kids, so you could do Shercrook, Shook or Crookman or something like that, if you feel inclined. Or give both the MN of Sherman and the LN of Crook.

OK I am really liking Crookman, BTW. Luke Crookman.
