"Betrayus" won the Name of the Year. This is a pejorative nickname that was first applied by Rush Limbaugh to Sen. Hagel of Nebraska, a Republican who has opposed President Bush's positions on the War in Iraq. Later the moveon.org website used the term for General Petraeus. This prompted them to be condemned on the floor of the Senate, even though no mention had been made of Limbaugh's use of the term. Here is a link to an article about this:

The 2nd place name was Google, and the 3rd place was Barack Hussein Obama.
I think Betrayus won because people were impressed that it had been used by both right-wing and left-wing commentators and so illustrated the division within the USA over the Iraq war. I understand that but would have preferred it myself if something had won that wasn't a deliberately insulting nickname. But as I am the moderator of the meeting where we vote, I don't get a vote myself unless I have to break a tie. :)

And what would you have voted for had you been allowed to vote?

My question too. Those were really interesting choices.

Interesting - I had no idea that Rush Limbaugh had made up the Betrayus name first!
I probably would have voted for Barack Hussein Obama also. Google is several years too late to be the 2007 name of the year, IMO.
