Here's an Explainer from Slate that talks a little bit about why the teacher in Sudan got in so much trouble, with a lot of other interesting tidbits (why Egypt banned double names, and the naming practices of English speaking Protestants, (like that naming a child after an angel would have been seen as sacrelegeous until about 100 years ago, etc.)

That article was pretty interesting, although the part about Spanish/Portugese Catholics using Jesus as a first name seems more about culture than religion... I'm an Irish/English Catholic, and I cannot imagine a little Irish Catholic named Jesus... it seems totally hispanic to me, not catholic... just an observation
