View Full Version : Do you find it hard for names for one gender?

I'm pretty set for a girls name (Lily) but even if we didn't use it, there's plenty of other choices I'd be thrilled to use (Caitlin, Amelia, etc). When it comes to boys however, I have no idea whatsoever! There's names I like, but none that really stand out, except ones I can't use (Lucas - due to surname, Ethan - cousin used it, Benjamin - Gareth's son's name so obviously out!). The list carries on. I struggle badly when it comes to boys names, and always have really.
Do you struggle to find/love names for one gender, but it's so easy for the other?

I'm really good with boys names. I have lots of names I love. But with girls it's difficult. I have very few girls names I like and almost none that I love...

Boy names are much easier for me! I still like and love a lot of girl names, but it's just a lot easier for me to fall in love with a boy name.

It's harder for me to like boys names than it is to like girls names. However, when I was pregnant, liking so many girls names didn't really benefit me at all since I couldn't picture myself actually using the name, kwim? I think my boys names are more set in stone than my girls names are...

Boys are way more difficult for me. I find it harder to really love anything.

I have a much more difficult time with boy names. I tend to like more uncommon names but have a tough time imagining actually using them. I think I believe that a boy with a less common name is more likely to be teased than a girl....i have no idea if this is true or not.

We only have a few boys names that we both really love, but a whole slew of girls names that we agree on. I find it harder to fall in love with boys names, but harder to narrow down the girl options.

Sort of. I have limited names on my girls list, but most of them I LOVE. I have lots of names on my boys list, but very, very few that I LOVE.

Boys names are a million times easier for me. I have a handful of names that I really love. With girls I have a ton of names I like, but I find it so difficult to figure out which ones I would actually use.

I have a tough time with names in general at the moment. I have my 'old favorites' that I'm not loving as much anymore, and nothing new that I'm extremely happy with.
Overall male names are harder for me to come up with, mostly because I feel like the expectation for boys names is to be strong and bold and firmly masculine, whereas female names have less expectations and the range of possibilities is almost endless - they can be frilly and feminine, traditional, creative, boy names turned to girl names, nature names, foreign sounding names etc. without being considered terribly 'out there'. I find that female names tend to run through trends whereas male names are more consistent.

I'm in the same boat. I have one set-in-stone girl's name and another that I really like, plus many more I would consider. But for boys, I'm just not liking anything on my list, and I've always found it hard to even make a boys' list.

Yep. Our girl's name is set and there's plenty of others that we agree on as well. Boys names are really hard for us to agree on. Neither of us like many boys names (except ones that other people we know have already used it seems) so it makes it really difficult for us to choose a name for a boy and in the end one of us will always have to settle.

Putting my boys list together was a snap. There are so many names that I love. Coming up with girls names is much more difficult, and combos even more so.

Lord help us if we ever have another boy, lol. We were lucky to agree on Sam. There are a few girl names we agree on, and some that we don't quite agree on but I'd be okay with, but boy names? We got nothin'.

I can come up with boys names and combos a ton easier than girls names! It's easier for me to fall in love with a boys name and make it my own, which was good considering DH knocked a ton of names off my list! But girls names are a whole nother story! I just don't like that many, and if I like them I don't necessarily love them. It's so much harder!

I have the same problem with boys too. I have a million ideas for girls names, but the names I like for boys: Nolan, Jacob, Lucas, Nathaniel maybe Calvin, Bennett, or Jensen.
Jacob & Lucas would both be terrible with our last name, so Nolan & Nathaniel? *sigh*

Can I say both? I go back and forth about loving names for boys and girls. However, in general I'd have to say boy's names are harder for me. Lately, however, girl's names have been really hard for me, even though my girl's list is longer.

Girls names are much easier for me. I went through a time a few months ago when I didn't like any girls names and loved a million boys names but that was very unusual for me!

Ummm, both? :haha:, I'm so picky that I have like 3 times as many middle names than first names.

Yes, girl names are easier for us than boys, although I feel like I'm less emotionally attached to boy names, so I could just pick any old name and be fine. A girl name I have to love.

Hmm I have diffrent issues with either.
Girl names it's easier to find new things that take my fancy, just seems more interesting to play with, but then they fall out of favour and I got into a slump.
Where as with boys it takes a lot for me to get behind a name, but then it stays on my list forever. There is 'the name' and then maybe half a dozen I like equally; so I'd have an easier time of it.

I find boys' names harder, probably largely because of the compromise with J. He's a lot more open to unusual girls' names. Having said that, I was happy with our final few had Clementine been a boy...just took a lot longer to come up with some names we both liked.

I find it pretty hard for both really, for boys I like tons but can never decide on one and for girls I love Phoebe so much that no other girl names come close.

Yes!
My problem is I love so many girls' names (I have pretty much equal love for Adriana, Anastasia, Bethany, Clara, Chelsea, Cora, Jillian, Jocelyn, Ivy, Miranda, Sabrina, Talia and Zoe!) that I can't pick which one I want to use if I have a girl.
My boys' name has been Adam for about 7 years now, and I can't even think of what I'd name a brother to Adam... everything else just seems so-so by comparison...

Truly I find both hard. There are a lot of names I like...but it's hard for me to find a name I absolutely adore...and usually when I do it's a name my dh can't stand and it ends up getting tossed anyway. It's a real struggle. I will say with girl names i am pickier. To me the boy names I like are so solid it'd be hard to curse my kid, but girl names are a different story. A boy named Jake or Matthew is pretty safe but a girl named I dunno Amelia may hate me for picking a name that while beautiful opens her up to teasing (think bedelia). Either way sometimes I feel like this :bonk:
