Going out on a limb here...

Hi, I'm Charm. I was a member of the boards back in 2003ish and have since finished undergrad and started a PhD in psychology. I'm currently trying to figure out if I can incorporate some research into names and impression formation into my next study. I came back to babynames to talk to the experts on the topic - you! (When you do a psychology degree, they teach you important things like how to flatter people. But seriously, I feel like while I spent my time doing my first degree, I have completely forgotten everything I knew about names, while everyone here has probably learnt the equivalent of a degree's worth of naming knowledge).

I was wondering if anyone would like to play onomasts journal club. My idea is that people take turns to provide a summary of an article (this can come from the popular press as well as from academic journals) that is to do with names. It could be random or we could have themes. Then people can provide comments on the author's conclusions, discuss how it relates to what they've seen in real life, ask the poster questions about the article, ask questions about things they'd like to know more about, et c, et c.

If there are some ayes, I'll start. If it's terribly uncool, I'll know with your prolonged silence. I'm pretty excited about getting to talk to you all anyway.

Sounds like a good idea.

Okay, I'll look around and see if I can find some interesting articles or issues. I was a bit disappointed to find that Onoma:Journal of the International Council of Onomastic Sciences seems to have stopped putting out issues in 2005. Anyway, I've seen some cool ones about perceptions about androgynous names, influence of names on hiring, people's use of cues in names to determine gender, etc etc. So I'm sure there'll be one that might be a good discussion starter.

This is an interesting idea. I'll be interested in seeing the articles you come up with and in having some discussion as well.
