i love Eowyn pronounced and spelt Ayrewyn
also Arwen is very pretty do you think you could use these names without the LOTR ASSOCIATION?

I like both Eowyn and Arwen a lot, but no, I don't think you could use them without the LOTR association. I don't think it's a bad association, and I might consider using them, but they're so distinct and unique to the story, you couldn't avoid it. I don't care for the Ayrewyn spelling at all.

I met a little girl named Arwen once. I'm guessing it's probably because of LOTR and I always have that association.

Anyone at all familiar with LOTR would probably always make an instant connection, but there's worse connotations a child's name could have :haha: And I think those names are beautiful. Maybe if the connection would really bother you, you might consider looking up Welsh names, as both Eowyn and Arwen have a very distinct Welsh sound to them, to my ears. Something like Bronwyn, perhaps? No? :haha: it's an idea anyway.

I agree with Mira. And around here Ayrewyn and Eowyn would be pronounced completely differently.

Since the name was created by Tolkein, then I think the association will be always be there. Unless someone hasn't read the books or seen the movies :)

I just overheard a little girl being called "Arwen" at work last week--and my brain automatically jumped to LOTR. Ditto the suggestion of Welsh names if the association would bother you. They are both pretty names, anyway!

I like both names - Arwen is on Shane's "if only I could talk Holly into that" list. Still, it's like my friend Rainbo who is always asked if her parents are hippies - people will always want to know if Arwen or Eowyn's parents are nerds.
