Baby formula has to be boiled to 212 degrees. Of course it has to be cooled before serving. The first task is exacting, the second time-consuming. Or at least they were: the Piena Baby Tender Touch Formula Maker will automatically boil, cool, and dispense water, “at the perfect, safest temperature for your baby,” the company says.

It’s still in development. But the makers say it’s inspired by “our own experiences as parents… Making a bottle took at least 10 minutes, from boiling the water, measuring out the formula, and then cooling the water to just the right temperature. There had to be a faster, more efficient way. We looked around for a baby formula maker. There were plenty of bottle warmers, but nothing that made mixing the formula for the bottle any easier. Engineers by education, we decided to create our own solution.”

The countertop device adjusts in height to fit bottles of all sizes. And it’s made of food grade, high-temperature resistant polypropylene, with no BPA or other harmful chemicals, Pienna claims. There’s a separate container to store and dispense the formula powder: The aluminum container can is air and water tight, which prevents air and moisture from affecting the quality of the powder formula.

The Formula Maker is also engineered to inhibit the growth of microorganisms, Piena adds: When microbes such as bacteria, mold and mildew come in contact with the inner powder container surface and the water reservoir surface, antimicrobial protection penetrates the cell wall of the microbe and disrupts key cell functions so that the microbe cannot function, grow or reproduce. Plus any microorganisms in the water are destroyed during the boiling process.
